Buyer's Guide · 2026 Outback

The seventh-generation 2026 Subaru Outback. Redesigned for the desert.

It's 110°F in Henderson. 60° by sundown at Mt Charleston. The roof rails take the kayak. Eight-and-a-half inches of clearance handle the Forest Service road. Symmetrical AWD holds the wet switchback.

A 10-minute buyer's guide to the redesigned 2026 Outback, written from a Las Vegas dealer's floor.

01The brief

Subaru rebuilt the Outback. Here's what changed.

A full seventh-generation redesign. Not a refresh.

The wagon profile is gone. In its place: a boxier midsize-SUV silhouette, two inches taller than the 2025, with a 12.1-inch portrait touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cluster on every trim.

The two Boxer engines continue — a 180-hp 2.5-liter and a 260-hp 2.4-liter turbo. Symmetrical AWD and the latest-generation EyeSight are standard on every trim. The turbo is reserved for three of the six trims; the 2.5-liter handles the rest.

Ground clearance: 8.7 inches, or 9.5 on the Wilderness. Cargo grows to 80.5 cubic feet with the seats folded — about five cubic feet more than the prior generation.

02The lineup

Six trims, organized around two questions.

First: do you want the turbo? Second: how much luxury?

Subaru also consolidated the lineup for 2026. Base, Onyx Edition, and Onyx Edition XT are gone. Six trims remain.

The 2.5-liter Boxer (180 hp) is the volume engine. It powers Premium, Limited, and Touring — plenty for I-15 commutes and Mt Charleston runs. The 2.4-liter turbo (260 hp) is reserved for Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness. It pulls a loaded Outback up steep grades without the 2.5L's downshifting, and it bumps tow capacity from 2,700 lb to 3,500 lb.

Within each engine choice, you're picking a comfort level. Premium is the well-equipped entry trim. Limited adds leather and heated rear seats. Touring is the luxury flagship with Nappa leather and Highway Hands-Free Assist. Limited XT and Touring XT are simply the turbo versions of those two trims. Wilderness is the off-road trim — turbo-only.

How Subaru's AWD differs from most crossovers

Most crossovers run as front-wheel-drive most of the time. They send power to the rear wheels only when the front wheels start to slip — a beat after you've already lost traction.

Subaru is different. All four wheels get power all the time, and the Boxer engine sits low and flat, balancing the weight evenly. The car feels planted before you ever ask it to grip.

Where this shows up in Las Vegas: Mt Charleston in winter. Lake Mead during a monsoon afternoon. The unpaved approach to Valley of Fire. Standing water on I-215 after a flash storm.

For 2026, Subaru retuned the system for sharper handling at highway speeds.

EyeSight Driver Assist — now with hands-free highway driving

EyeSight is Subaru's safety-and-driver-assist package. Standard on every 2026 Outback trim.

For 2026, the system uses three forward-facing cameras and radar — up from the two cameras on the prior generation. Cameras struggle in heavy rain, fog, or snow. Radar doesn't. Adding radar fills the gap.

Standard across every trim: Adaptive Cruise Control. Pre-Collision Braking. Lane Centering. Lane Departure and Sway Warning. Front Cross-Traffic Braking. Emergency Stop Assist.

The big 2026 upgrade is on Touring and Touring XT only: Highway Hands-Free Assist up to 85 mph. On supported highways, the driver can take their hands off the wheel. A camera in the cabin watches the driver's eyes to make sure they're still paying attention to the road. Take your eyes off the road and the system warns you, then disengages.

If the system detects an unresponsive driver, Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection takes over. Changes lanes if needed. Pulls to the shoulder. Activates hazards. Notifies emergency services. Unlocks the doors for first responders.

For independent crash data on EyeSight-equipped Subarus, the IIHS Highway Loss Data Institute publishes claim-frequency studies at iihs.org.

The Outback's 8.7-inch clearance handles the washboard sections of dirt roads to Lake Mead boat launches and Forest Service roads to Mt Charleston without dragging — situations where a 6-inch crossover scrapes.

Fuel economy

EPA ratings (combined city/highway):

  • 2.5L (Premium, Limited, Touring): 27 mpg combined — 25 city / 31 highway
  • 2.4T (Limited XT, Touring XT): 24 mpg combined — 21 city / 29 highway
  • Wilderness: 21 city / 27 highway — slightly lower because of the all-terrain tires and the extra ride height

The 2026 Outback is about 100 lb heavier than the 2025, with a boxier shape that pushes more air. Most trims dropped 1 mpg compared to the 2025 ratings.

What to expect in a Las Vegas summer: count on roughly 1–2 mpg below the EPA combined number. Running the AC against 110°F afternoons takes its toll. That's true of any modern crossover here, not specific to the Outback.

04Crashworthiness

An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ in its debut model year.

A new platform. New body structure. New crash-test result.

The 2026 Outback is a full redesign — IIHS tested it fresh, on tests current as of 2026, and awarded Top Safety Pick+ on March 24, 2026. The prior generation's record didn't carry over.

2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+

Highest IIHS designation, awarded March 24, 2026.

"Good" ratings across all front and side crash tests, including the updated moderate-overlap front and updated side tests IIHS introduced in recent years. "Good" on vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian crash-prevention systems. "Good" on headlights.

What about NHTSA?

NHTSA tests vehicles separately, often months after launch. The 2026 Outback's 5-Star rating hasn't posted yet.

The 2025 Outback earned 5 stars overall — but a redesign starts the rating clock over. Until NHTSA publishes 2026 results, the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is the most current independent crash-test data available.

NHTSA results post at NHTSA.gov when complete.

05The valley

Built for desert heat, monsoon storms, and weekend math.

Three things separate a car that works in Southern Nevada from one that doesn't.

Desert heat

Summer surface temperatures in the valley regularly exceed 110°F from June through September.

Subaru recommends replacing the cabin air filter every 12,000–15,000 miles. Las Vegas drivers should plan on the shorter end. Desert dust — especially during summer windstorms along I-215 and I-15 — clogs filters faster than what owners deal with in milder climates.

Service hours at Subaru of Las Vegas: Mon–Fri 7 AM–6 PM, Sat 7 AM–5 PM. Schedule online at subaruoflasvegas.com/service.

Monsoon flash floods

Las Vegas averages just 4–5 inches of rain a year — but most of it falls during the July-through-September monsoon, in storms that can drop an inch of water in an hour.

Symmetrical AWD plus 8.7 inches of ground clearance gives the Outback a real margin in standing water. A typical crossover sits about six inches off the ground and sends power to one axle. The Outback sits two-and-a-half inches higher and powers all four wheels at once.

Roof rails are standard on every trim. Rated 220 lb dynamic / 800 lb static.

Subaru bumped the static rating from 700 to 800 lb for the 7th-gen. Enough for a Yakima or Thule rack with two kayaks — plus a rooftop tent within the dynamic limit.

06The interior

Two inches taller. Five more cubic feet of cargo.

Subaru added height and squared off the body. The cargo numbers went up.

The Outback's maximum cargo figure now leads every direct competitor — Forester, CR-V, and RAV4.

192.3
Overall length

For context, the seats-folded numbers across the segment: Outback 80.5, CR-V (gas) 76.5, RAV4 (hybrid) 70.4, Forester 69.1.

Two kids' sports bags, a stroller, and a cooler fit flat on the Outback's load floor. The same load in a CR-V usually means stacking.

Second-row legroom is 39.5 inches — comfortable for two adults on a Vegas-to-Zion road trip.

Three across works for booster-age kids. Tight for three rear-facing convertible car seats. If you need three across with rear-facing seats, the three-row Ascent is the better Subaru.

07The competition

Outback vs. Forester, CR-V, and the redesigned RAV4.

Las Vegas families cross-shop the Outback against three vehicles.

The four things that decide most cross-shopping: standard AWD, ground clearance, towing, and roof load.

How to choose

Vs. Forester. Outback for highway trips and maximum cargo. Forester for easier parking, the hybrid option (2026 Outback isn't hybrid), or the same 3,500 lb tow at a lower price via the Forester Wilderness.

Vs. CR-V. CR-V wins on cargo (gas trim) and hybrid fuel economy. Outback wins on standard AWD, ground clearance, and a much higher roof-rack capacity. Honda charges $1,500 extra for AWD; Subaru includes it.

Vs. RAV4. Toyota made the 2026 RAV4 hybrid-only. RAV4 wins on hybrid efficiency. Outback wins on standard AWD, ground clearance, 2.4T towing, and the 80.5 cu ft max cargo number.

09The questions families ask

Frequently asked questions about the 2026 Outback.

What is the 2026 Subaru Outback MSRP?

Manufacturer suggested retail prices are set by Subaru of America and can change. We publish current MSRPs and live inventory at subaruoflasvegas.com/new-vehicles/outback.

On top of MSRP, expect: a destination & delivery fee set by Subaru of America, a $499 Subaru of Las Vegas documentation fee, Nevada sales tax, title, registration, and DMV fees.

For a written out-the-door number on a specific VIN, call sales at 702-495-2197.

Is the Wilderness worth the upgrade over Premium or Limited?

The Wilderness adds:

0.8″ of extra ground clearance. The 2.4T turbo (260 hp vs 180). Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires. Electronic dampers. A front skid plate. An anti-glare hood decal. 3,500 lb tow rating.

The penalty: lower fuel economy and a higher price.

Worth it if you regularly drive unpaved roads to trailheads, tow a small camper, or want the extra clearance for Mt Charleston winter runs.

If you mostly stay on pavement, Premium or Limited fits better. Want the turbo without off-road suspension? Limited XT or Touring XT.

Can an Outback handle the dirt road into Valley of Fire or Lake Mead boat ramps?

Yes.

8.7″ of ground clearance (9.5″ on Wilderness) plus Symmetrical AWD with X-MODE handles the washboard, gravel, and graded-dirt sections. That covers Valley of Fire State Park, Lake Mead Hemenway Harbor and Boulder Beach, and the unpaved approach to Mt Charleston picnic areas.

Wilderness adds X-MODE Dual-Function with a Deep Snow / Mud setting for deeper sand or wet ruts.

The Outback isn't a rock-crawler — that's 4Runner TRD or Wrangler Rubicon territory. But the unpaved roads most Las Vegas families drive are well within its limits.

What's the real Las Vegas summer fuel economy?

EPA combined ratings: 27 mpg for the 2.5L trims (Premium, Limited, Touring), 24 mpg for the turbo (Limited XT, Touring XT). The Wilderness sits a little lower at 21 city / 27 highway because of the all-terrain tires.

In Las Vegas summer — 105–115°F highs, AC running all day — expect 1–2 mpg below those ratings. That's normal for any modern crossover here.

Live numbers by trim: fueleconomy.gov.

How does the Outback compare to a CR-V or RAV4 for a Las Vegas family?

The Outback wins on standard AWD (a $1,500 option on most CR-V trims). On ground clearance (8.7″ vs 7.8–8.2″ CR-V or 8.1″ RAV4). On towing for 2.4T trims (3,500 vs 1,500–1,750 lb base). On roof-rack load (220 lb dynamic + 800 lb static vs 165–175 dynamic).

The CR-V Hybrid and 2026 RAV4 Hybrid both win on combined fuel economy. The new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid offers about 50 miles of EV range.

If your priorities are AWD-included pricing, ground clearance, towing, and rooftop gear — the Outback is the better fit.

How is the 2026 Outback different from a Subaru Forester?

The Outback is longer (192.3″ vs 183.3″). Same rear legroom, roughly. More cargo behind the second row (34.6 vs 27.5 cu ft). More max cargo (80.5 vs 69.1 cu ft on most Forester trims).

The Forester is shorter, easier to park, and easier to load child seats into — the door opening is more vertical. Slightly cheaper at every trim. It also offers a hybrid powertrain. The 2026 Outback doesn't.

Both share Symmetrical AWD, EyeSight, and the same safety-tech package. Both earned 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.
